BRITISH COLUMBIA RULES

British Columbia payroll rules to get right

For employers across British Columbia, including Vancouver, Victoria, Surrey, Kelowna and Burnaby.

B.C. calculates statutory holiday pay for eligible employees as an average day’s pay, and working on the holiday has its own rules. Use the province’s statutory holiday pay guidance to confirm which earnings and days are included. Do not copy the value of the last shift and call it holiday pay.

Remote work adds a second question. If an employee works from another province, the CRA’s province-of-employment guidance decides withholding, and a home address alone does not. Record the arrangement and the reason for your setup choice.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Example: a café adds staff before a holiday

Picture a Victoria café with long-serving staff and two recent hires. Before the holiday, the preparer brings the employee list, start dates, earnings history and holiday schedule to the review. One identical amount for everyone would skip the eligibility and earnings checks.

The manager confirms who worked, the preparer verifies the treatment, and the owner checks the statement. This is a made-up scenario about preparing evidence, not a promise that new hires qualify or a prescribed holiday amount.

QUESTIONS

British Columbia payroll FAQ

Can PayHr be used for B.C. employees?

Yes. British Columbia is a supported province. Review your employee situations during setup, especially for staff who work across provincial boundaries.

What if my B.C. employee works remotely from another province?

The employee’s home address alone does not settle withholding. Check the CRA’s province-of-employment guidance, document the arrangement, and review employment standards separately from tax withholding.

What does PayHr cost for a British Columbia business?

There is no monthly fee. Manual payroll is free and includes unlimited employees, contractors and pay runs; you arrange the payments and remittances yourself. Automated payments cost $6 per person per automated pay run. For example, five employees on one automated run come to $30, and a manual run costs $0. Optional ROE filing is $5 per document and T4 or T4A filing is $15 per document. Prices are in CAD, and wages, taxes and remittances are separate.

Does PayHr support Quebec?

No. PayHr supports payroll in every Canadian province except Quebec, so this page is for British Columbia employers and for businesses whose employees work in the other supported provinces.

Can I switch to PayHr in the middle of the year?

Yes. Reconcile year-to-date earnings and deductions against your existing reports before the first live run, keep those reports, and note who checked each balance.
