ONTARIO RULES
For employers across Ontario, including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Brampton and London.
Public holiday pay is where Ontario payroll most often needs a second look. The general calculation takes the regular wages earned and the vacation pay payable in the four work weeks before the work week containing the holiday, then divides by 20. Eligibility, exclusions and the rules for working on the holiday all matter. Ontario’s public holiday guide sets out the treatment.
Because the amount depends on past earnings, a shift change does not simply carry over into the holiday line. PayHr keeps each employee’s earnings history with the pay run, so the person reviewing the holiday can see the period behind the number.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Say a Toronto retailer moves an employee from three shifts a week to four, and a public holiday falls soon after. Copying the new schedule into the holiday line would skip the review. The preparer gathers the wages and vacation pay from the relevant weeks, checks eligibility and notes the basis for the amount.
The owner then approves the holiday line on its own, separate from ordinary hours. This is an illustrative workflow, not a customer story or a calculation for a particular employee.
