NOVA SCOTIA RULES
For employers across Nova Scotia, including Halifax, Dartmouth, Sydney, Truro and Bridgewater.
Nova Scotia’s Labour Standards Code provides six paid holidays for eligible employees. Remembrance Day is handled under separate legislation, and the province’s holiday pay guide explains the difference and the eligibility rules.
Use the applicable rule rather than assuming every day the business closes is a paid holiday under the Code. A contract may give benefits beyond the statutory minimum, so note the reason for any extra paid day in the employee’s record. When shifts change with demand, keep the original schedule, the actual hours and the approved changes so the holiday review has the facts.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Consider a small Dartmouth agency that closes for a statutory holiday and also grants an extra paid day under its own policy. The reviewer should be able to tell the statutory treatment from the employer’s benefit. Labelling both lines “holiday” hides which policy explains the second day.
Keep the policy and the earnings treatment together, then check the statement before approval. This fictional example is about record keeping and does not establish that a particular day must be paid.
EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE
Your team sees pay statements, tax information and employment details on iOS, Android or the web.
Year-end slips and Records of Employment come from the payroll you approved. Manual slips are included; automatic issue is $15 per T4 or T4A and $5 per ROE.
Record hours on timesheets and bring approved time into the pay run.
Automated pay runs send employee pay by direct deposit for $6 per person per pay run.
Send TD1s and other documents for e-signature for $1 per signed document.
